Artist Bio:

A fine work of art has the power to silence the chatter in the mind and lift us to another place! I have had a lifelong love of creative expression through painting and design. Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, I have long enjoyed the beautiful African savanna surrounded by nature and the wildlife that has influenced my art. My earliest memories are of walks with my grandfather in our garden where we would pick flowers and press them in the pages of books to preserve their beauty. And later, when dried, I would hold the thin petals to the light and study their delicate structures. During my childhood, I enjoyed drawing and excelled at realistic representation of flowers and animals using coloured pencils. It was this love of nature and the need to observe detail that led me to painting.

My credit goes to formal training which I received at a Fine Art college in Mumbai, India, for giving me the skill and technique to create work that expresses my innate passion for beauty. Now residing in beautiful Toronto, I enjoy the vast open spaces surrounded by nature. I am grateful that my journey as an artist has come full circle. I have worked as an art teacher in a Montessori School for several years. Teaching has added a purpose and meaning to my life. I am passionate about art education and believe strongly in teaching both children and adults the skills that can enable them to draw and paint realistically. I am thankful that I get to spend my time sharing my passion for art with others.

Description of my art:

I like to approach each composition with the intention of revealing something unseen or unnoticed. I am now retired but enjoy facilitating private paint parties, continue to take workshops to improve my skills and am strongly focused on pursuing painting, allowing myself to explore subject matter ranging from flowers to animals to landscapes to the odd figurative piece, finding that beauty is everywhere. It’s in the patterns in the fabric of a sari, in the textures on the bark of a tree, in the colours in the sky, or in the light in a person’s eyes. I enjoy experimenting with various mediums but always find myself returning to painting with acrylics and watercolours. My diverse experience has allowed me to facilitate countless art projects. Nature and music are my main sources of inspiration.

Achievements:

I have held my first successful Solo Art show, titled ‘Delightful Memories’ at the Ontario Power Generation show space. I have also showcased and participated in various Art shows as well as Juried art shows with PineRidge Art Council, The Art Guild of Scarborough, Cedar Ridge Art Gallery, Ajax Creative Art Club, Scugog Arts and Scarborough Arts.

Recently I enjoyed painting on wooden garden chairs for Scugog art gallery, Port Perry and Durham tourism as part of Art in Public places. Contributing my art towards various fund raising projects globally gives me immense satisfaction.

Today I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by a loving family who support me in my artistic efforts.
