Janet Kobayashi
Meeting at the Japanese Tea House, 40 x 30 Acrylic on Canvas
I have loved to draw and paint since I was a very young child. I grew up in The Beaches and in my early teens my parents moved north of the city to Kleinberg. I took as many art subjects as I could during high school and worked at the McMichael Gallery during the summer. Sadly I did not have the opportunity to attend OCAD, however I attended various art courses here and there as time permitted. I had a busy career and raised four children, so even though my art took a back seat, I never lost the passion to create.
I would sew Halloween costumes for my children and do crafts with them and occasionally I would get time to do a painting or two. Now that I am retired I have been able to focus more on my art. I started off doing mostly water colour, but now I am doing oil and acrylic on canvas and mixed media. I like to push my boundaries. I will paint people, landscapes, buildings, animals, anything that my eye finds pleasing. I haven’t found my groove yet, (or maybe I have but just I don’t know it), but I am working on it.
My favorite artists are the French impressionists. I love their use of colour and light and flow and style. I joined an art class at Birkdale Community Centre four years ago, where I met some wonderful people who are also passionate about art. Thanks to them I was introduced to the Scarborough Art Guild, where I am happy to say I was accepted into this talented group and I am enjoying meeting so many amazing artists and new friends.
