SCULPTOR IN STONE AND CLAY

Andrew retired from a career in management consulting in 2003. Inspired from an early age by a gifted art teacher at school in Edinburgh, Andrew has had a lifelong interest in Art and the Arts. While he followed a professional career in business, he continued to take advantage of opportunities to work in watercolours and life drawing as often as possible. A long time Scarborough resident he is a member of The Art Guild of Scarborough and the Cedar Ridge Studio Gallery.

Shortly before retirement he started working in clay under the tutelage of the late Stuart Aikman. After retiring he pursued his interest in sculpting with clay and then with softer stones such as alabaster and soapstone. He enjoys the contrast of working in both stone and clay. The art and discipline of working in stone is thinking in negative space. What must you remove in determining what should remain?

His work has won awards in many juried shows. When working with clay, he often completes his pieces using Raku glazing and firing techniques. He also uses irregular shaped and sculpted hand-made clay tiles as the basis for his mixed media pieces.

In addition to sculpting and painting, Andrew enjoys cooking; gardening; reading; writing; golf and curling.
