Diana Li
Circle Game, 12 x 16 Watercolour
Diana started sketching in her twenties with an Italian artist in Hong Kong. After that experience she was hooked and ended up carrying a sketch book with her every day since then. Diana used to sketch people (usually from the back) during the 45 minutes it took the ferry to get her to work but on weekends she painted outdoors with friends. Eventually she stopped sketching and painting for a while to raise a young family before emigrating to Canada.
Diana joined the Art Guild of Scarborough in 1995. She found the weekly demonstrations inspiring. She was encouraged after receiving Special merits awards and honorable mentions for several paintings at juried shows. She was excited when one of her plein air sketches was chosen for the Scarborough MPP’s 1999 calendar.
Over the years, Diana has experimented with fabric, acrylic, pastel, oil, and ink, besides the watercolour she learned earlier. In her attempt to explore various techniques and styles, Diana has attended several workshops but has never given up her habit of carrying a sketch pad with her wherever she goes. After retirement, Diana decided to go back to watercolour, which is less forgiving, but more environmentally friendly.
