Gary Faulkner

Artist Bio:

I have enjoyed drawing from a young age and was influenced by my father who was a very successful commercial artist in Toronto. After school I spent seven years taking voice lessons in Toronto with a former opera singer. I performed solos at Roy Thomson Hall for a few years, anthems at a number of Blue Jay Games and was guest soloist at numerous weddings, funerals and concerts. I thought at some point my voice would disappear so about fifteen years ago I decided to dedicate more time to developing my skills in visual arts. Picking up a paint brush, I started painting with acrylic paints but quickly transferred to oil medium which I thoroughly enjoyed. Surprisingly my voice hasn’t left me so far so I’m still singing.

I enjoy painting still life, landscape and the challenge of portrait painting. I always look for an image that creates a mood or feeling. I have enjoyed over the year creating still life paintings that appear 3-D. It is always a compliment when the viewer touches the painting to see if it actually is just painted on board or canvas. With painting I have realized that it’s all in the details and having patience to say “I’m finished” only when you are totally satisfied with your painting. I have always enjoyed drawing and sketching and have found much satisfaction during the drawing process of the image before I move on to the painting stage. Recently I have discovered scratch art, the process of drawing on scratchboard, a black ink clayboard.

In 2011 I was director of Silver Stone Gallery in Pickering opened by the Pine Ridge Arts Council. This opportunity allowed me to form some long lasting friendships with artists from Durham and Toronto.

My business career included 23 years at TransCanada Pipelines and 10 years at Royal Bank of Canada in finance and investments.

I have had the honor of being President of The Art Guild of Scarborough for five years and have been juried into many art shows in Toronto and the Durham area. A number of my paintings are owned by collectors in Canada, U.S. and Europe. The Academy of Realist Art and private instruction from a local master artist have been beneficial in my continued classical development as an artist.  My goal is to constantly improve as an artist each year and always remain a student. I feel blessed because I can express myself through my painting and in song.
