Kay Hubbard
Artist Bio:
Kay’s interest in painting began when she completed Art Education courses at the University of Illinois. Sessions with numerous well-respected artists have added to her knowledge of the medium and inspired her work. She had the privilege of studying at the Haliburton School of Arts each Summer while staying at her cottage in Haliburton. Shelley Beach, Gordon MacKenzie and Tom Lynch were especially influential. She continues to take advanced watercolour classes on Friday mornings with Moira Clark, who provides private sessions and is also an instructor at the Avenue Road School of Art.
After a 46 year career she is now retired with time to paint. She taught beginner Watercolour classes at Michael’s prior to the COVID epidemic. Kay has a doctorate in Adult Education and is an active Professional Certified Coach. She currently coaches homeless women through the Toronto Up With Women Organization. Her art workshops use her background and skills as a professional Educator.
She is a member of the Toronto Watercolour Society, PineRidge Arts Council, Art Guild of Scarborough, Volusia County Palette and Brush Club and Daytona Beach Art League. Her paintings are on permanent display at the Peppermill Restaurant in Minden, Ontario. She also annually participates in solo and group shows, both juried and non-juried.
What inspires Kay’s artwork: Cottage country and a love of nature combine to inspire her paintings which are often landscapes. She strives for her paintings to show places where one would love to be. She believes that painting is also about experimentation and having fun! She is a Lewis Carroll devotee. The watercolour medium takes her through the looking glass where paint continually surprises and fascinates. Kay is “curiouser and curiouser” about colour, watercolour textures and unexpected effects.
Description of Kay’s artwork: Her work is largely nature and cottage country landscapes. However she has been compelled to follow the white rabbit to a world full of surprises in a watercolour wonderland. Her solo shows have also included florals, city-scapes, a mysterious door-knob and a close up of a caterpillar.
Awards and Accomplishments:
Kay annually participates in solo and group shows, both juried and non-juried. She was the winner of the prestigious Judges Choice Award given by the Art League of Daytona Beach in the annual Palette and Brush Club show (2020).
Her greatest moments have been written and verbal appreciation for her work. After a solo show at the Durham Natural Health Center (2022), the following was published in the PineRidge Arts Council Artscene Newsletter:
“I would like to say a few words of appreciation, Kay, for your beautiful art works. Your watercolour paintings are creating a fascinating and happy, and absolutely peaceful atmosphere in our therapeutic space. The positive and tranquil energy from your painting is truly helping our patients and staff. It was one of my greatest moments that I encountered your art.”
Sonoko Sato of the Durham Natural Health Center
