Artist Bio:

My art is about bringing the sense of joy and passion I see in the world to the viewers of my work.

“For the wonders that astound us” is a line from a song of thanksgiving that inspires me. I like to capture the beauty in even the mundane objects and places. It is about seeing, of being cognizant of the world around me.

I was born and raised in Jamaica, and for many years I took piano lessons. I also played the organ, and was for some years organist and choir director at my church. Now as a retiree from the medical field, I have discovered the visual artist within, having been introduced to the art of painting in watercolour and acrylic.

I have found that music and art create works that not only unlock emotions, but also alter one’s mood, trigger memories, and act as a source of comfort and inspiration. Visual art and music have numerous parallels because they share elements such as harmony, balance, rhythm and repetition.

As a child I was fascinated by the burst of colours in my mother’s garden, and by the birds, butterflies and insects that they attracted. Now as one late to the art of painting, I draw on the memories of those colours, sunsets over the ocean, the mountains all around, and am able to see the beauty of the Canadian landscape through those lenses.

Seeing the works of great artists as I travelled through Europe and Canada has also influenced and motivated me. It has shown me that if there is any “secret” in painting any subject matter, it is the artist’s understanding of the subject, or feeling, prior to painting it. This has also been enhanced by the instructions received from teachers such as Leslie Staple, Grethe Jensen and the late J. Dampf. The in-person and on-line demonstrations afforded by the Art Guild of Scarborough have also provided the technical confidence required for experimentation, imagination and joy in the creative process.

My work has been exhibited at the Leaside Public Library, Cedar Ridge Studio Gallery, The Gerard Art Space, and the Art Guild of Scarborough.

It is rewarding to have family, friends and strangers from across Canada, the U.S. and the Caribbean wanting my painting in homes and offices.
