Artist Bio:
I began my artistic explorations as a classically trained clarinetist and music educator and realized fairly early that the arts bring me peace and a meaningful outlet for self-expression. I find joy in creating things that I think are beautiful and encouraging others to explore their own abilities to express themselves through the arts. My passion for visual art began after my children were born, when I discovered that the permanence of visual art provides a different kind of satisfaction from creating music and presents so many new possibilities.
Over the past 18 years I have explored a variety of media, including acrylics, oils and paper collage, focusing mainly on landscape and figurative work. Most recently I have been working to develop my skills as a plein air painter, and I find that painting outdoors has provided me with a new opportunity to immerse myself in the beauty around me. I am thrilled to be a member of the Art Guild of Scarborough, where I have been able to participate in juried art shows and begin to sell my work. I study visual art mainly during the summer months at my cottage in Haliburton where I have been privileged to learn from outstanding instructors including John David Anderson, Kal Honey, Sam Paonessa, Brian Smith and Rosemary Vanderbreggen.
What inspires my artwork:
I am intrigued by the play between light and shadow and love to experiment with colour. While I strive to create a recognizable interpretation of what I see, I also try to go beyond the literal and show what it is about a particular view that makes it sing to me. Ultimately, I create because it makes me happy and it is my goal to convey how grateful I am to be surrounded by so much beauty, both in nature and in humanity.
