Usha Kumar

Artist Bio:

I am Usha Kumar born in Sri Lanka which is called the pearl of the Indian Ocean and currently I live in Toronto. My interest towards art began during my young age, and became my hobby as many other artists. I did not get the opportunity to develop that interest while I was back in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, I was a mother of two children and working full time as an Administrator at the Royal Norwegian Embassy, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. After my retirement and immigrating to Canada I got the opportunity to develop my long-standing passion towards art. I followed courses and enhanced my knowledge. Since I had the innate ability in art and interest in colours I easily picked up the basics and was able to utilize that in developing good paintings. I am a member in the Art Guild of Scarborough as well as in the Beach Guild of Fine Arts and participated in many juried shows and other non-juried shows, which gave me the courage to show my ability and confidence. In addition, I participated in many other outdoor shows as well. I still follow workshops and classes from time to time to update my knowledge and get to know the trending techniques.

What inspires my art works: Nature is beautiful and is God ‘s gift to human beings. Blue and green are my favourite colours. I find my inspiration for colours from nature. Animals and birds add more colour and beauty to nature which is another source of inspiration to my paintings. I love to add them to my landscape paintings. When I am creating paintings related to nature, I always feel very calm and relaxed. This is also a reason that I got involved in creating artwork – to keep a calm mind and heart. Since I love travelling and taking pictures of landscapes, when I make the landscape paintings it brings back memories of places that I visited and would love to visit again. I also like to paint in abstract the same landscape and it gives a different perception. I like acrylic medium as it dries fast and has a glossy effect.

Nature's Gift

Description of my artwork: My artwork encompasses mostly colourful landscapes, seascapes, city scapes, birds, and animals. When painting animals and birds I use palette knives and thin line brushes to bring out details. I am very enthusiastic in learning new techniques, especially about different textures. I use different tools to create textures with my artwork. Although much of my works are on landscape and animals, I experiment converting those into abstract and let the viewers enjoy my abstract aspect of realism as well. Even though I have done many paintings, each piece of work that I undertake is always done with much care and love. I find that every painting that I have created or currently working on is a challenge and experiment in finding innovations. I always have a story behind each piece that I have made, however, I expect the dynamic sense of  movements in my paintings resonates with the viewer in their own way.

Awards and Accomplishments: I have participated in many juried shows and non-juried shows. Some of the paintings got awards in those shows. I have participated in many shows and exhibitions both via the clubs that I’ve mentioned above as well as individually. The annual juried shows give me the inspiration to continue and explore further in this field. The happiest moments are when I share the knowledge and interests with fellow artists. This in turn gives me more strength and courage to make more artwork. I feel very energetic and happy when I receive verbal appreciation from my clients and friends.
