Valerie Russell

Artist Bio:

I was born and educated in Southampton, England and emigrated to Canada in 1969 with my husband and 2 sons and have resided in Scarborough ever since.

I started drawing and painting at an early age, however that pastime would not stand me in good stead and help raise and support a family so accounting became my main source of income. I took evening CGA courses at Ryerson & Centennial College whilst working for the Bank of Nova Scotia until 1990. I then worked as an accountant for the Weston Family taking early retirement in 1996.

I started taking evening art classes at O.C.A. and also at Cedarbrae Collegiate, realizing very quickly that this was my passion. I joined the Art Guild of Scarborough and soon became a part of the Executive, volunteering in most positions over a period of years. I took over as Treasurer and continued in this position for 12 years. I now voluntarily examine the books of account at year-end for accuracy of financial status in preparation and presentation to the Members.

I paint as often as possible and my subjects are land/seascapes and wildlife, created in my home studio from photographs captured on location. I have had the good fortune to have travelled to many places, back to the U.K. on many occasions and across Canada (from west to east; to the Arctic (where I travelled on 2 separate occasions, once singly and then as part of a group of artists – Arctic Quest). I have travelled to the U.S.A; Italy; France; Budapest and Vienna garnering all kinds of images and treasured memories along the way.

I was inspired to paint Arctic subjects-Polar Bears and Ice-bergs and also enjoy painting people’s pets, wildlife and land/seascapes. My winter images have been frequently selected by The Printing House for their annual Christmas Card Fund raising charities and have also been published in The Scarborough Mirror; Toronto Star and the American Artist Magazine.

I have exhibited in many galleries in places that I have visited and been blessed with many awards and certificates of Merit of which I am very proud. My artwork is part of a Permanent Collection in Victoria B.C. and Speleto, Italy.

My painting mediums are acrylic, watercolour/pen & ink and is depicted in a representational style.
