Ted Martin
Jakarta (Indonesia) Sunda Kelapa, 15 x 21 Watercolour
Over the past 10 years or so, watercolour painting has become an important activity for me, with a focus on documenting and interpreting subjects from my travels, particularly Mexico, Italy, Spain, and Africa. I look for scenes which represent my essential memory of the place, and which have strong graphic and dramatic qualities. Given my architectural background, often the subjects include buildings, but people, landscapes, and animals have also featured. Architectural subjects are fairly accurately represented, because viewers may also be familiar with the buildings in question, and may notice discrepancies. Again, I look for viewpoints, lighting, colours, and dramatic effects, to bring out new aspects of the subject. I also focus on human activities – the markets, processions, festivals, weddings, etc., which are typical of a place; its climate, culture, and environment.
